Let's delve further into the Blaze Orange Collection.

I come from an avid hunting family. Most people in this part of the country do. Ever since I can remember the fall meant it was time to go hunting with dad. That was exciting for me... all except for the wearing orange part.

Now that doesn't seem like it would be that bad. It is an essential step in preparing for a hunt. (That and not forgetting to put a roll of toilet paper in your pack...eesh.) Nobody wants to get mistaken for wild game and get shot by some crazy! (And that's what you'd be if you accidentally shot somebody thinking they were your target animal. You should never take a shot unless you are COMPLETELY 100% sure it is indeed the species you want to kill. Safety first.)

But my dad hates wearing orange. He puts on the minimum he can get away with and away he goes. (He also loves to poke fun at people who think they need their whole body covered in orange, as do I. It is totally unnecessary and you look ridiculous.) However, for me there were two orange options: A mesh safety vest with a horrible Velcro front closure or a giant, itchy stocking cap with a Hunter Safety patch sewn to the front of it. Either option was a nightmare. The vest was too big and I would get tangled in it. Then the hat would slide all over my head and itch something terrible! For the most part I wore the hat. It didn't hinder my ability to shoot as much as the vest did.
Now the problem with this was my dad's affinity for photographing a kill. This is a process for him. He always has his big fancy camera and poses you with the giant animal you just shot, sometimes going so far as to rubber band it's mouth shut so it's tongue isn't hanging out the side of its mouth. That's all fine and dandy. Now the dead animal looks good, but what about me?!

If I leave the hat on I look like a total dweeb. If I take the hat off I'm left with my hair in a total rats nest from the hat sliding all over my head all day long. And what's worse is that either way this photo will be framed and put on my dad's reloading room wall! WHERE EVERYONE CAN SEE IT! Traumatic. Especially for the 12-year-old me that just shot her first deer. But now, twelve years later, I have come up with a solution!... that seems like an excessive amount of time. I really should have thought about this sooner... Anyway, here they are! The Blaze Orange Collection:

Newsboy Cap with Oak Buttons

Newsboy caps are very popular and just plain adorable. This cap is made with Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn. This yarn is very soft, thick and durable.I use it a lot and it's one of my favorites.

The buttons came from another Etsy shop in Indiana called askcheese. They have all sorts of wood crafts, including a wonderful selection of buttons. 

If you would like to make this hat for yourself, check out Hopeful Honey. She has a lot of patterns available. Some are free, some you can buy on Etsy. Sometimes I find her patterns a little hard to follow. There seems to be a lot of assumptions. But in the end they are well worth it!

This hat would honestly work for anyone. It may look a little girly on a man, but no worries, dude. If you're a real man it won't matter ;) As for washing and drying, wash on gentle and preferably hang dry. I'm afraid of what might happen to the buttons over time in the drier. If you do dry this hat please take precautions.

Bobble Hat

This hat would work on anyone, but I would stick with woman and children mainly. It is meant to fit snugly, and for a man, this hat may be a little too snug. The Bobble hat is washing machine and drier friendly!

I'm not really certain why, but I just really love this hat. Maybe because it is my own design, but maybe it is the 12-year-old me celebrating a hat that wont slide and isn't itchy! This hat is soft, fits snugly and looks adorable. PLUS, the open design allows for a ponytail to be poked through the back of the hat. Super perk!

Chunky Cowl Scarf

This scarf works for anyone and everyone. It may be a little big on a smaller child but it is so soft and cozy that I doubt they would complain. Also, machine wash and dry friendly!

I have two cowls in this collection. The chunky cowl and the classic cowl. The difference is that the chunky cowl has a more open weave. This allows a little more give when it bends and also an opportunity for it to breath more. Breathing more means that it allows more air in and out. This may be a perk or a downfall in your opinion.
The classic cowl is a tighter weave and therefore a more dense fabric. It doesn't have as much bend or movement as the chunky cowl. It also doesn't have the open spaces to breath and let air in and out. Again, this may be a perk or a downfall depending on your taste... which is why I made both!

Classic Headband with Ash Button

Like all of the other items in this collection, this headband is made from Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn. It is thick, soft and durable. It makes the perfect accessory to keep your ears warm on a cold hunt. 

The button also came from askcheese. I really do love their stuff. I have purchased buttons made in woods from black locust to grapefruit from their shop. Pretty amazing.

This headband fits both men and women... and maybe older children. Younger children could use it as a cowl! As always. this yarn allows the headband to machine washable. The button, however, makes it a little less drier friendly. Hang dry or machine dry on low with caution.

This headband is truly acceptable for either gender. Like I said earlier, it may be a bit big for smaller children, but it would work as a scarf in a pinch. I have the same style of headband in green and I use it all the time. It is a perfect everyday accessory.  

Criss-Cross Headband
